Why You Should Be Supplementing with Protein

What is a Protein and What Does it Do for You?

Most everybody has heard of protein, but what is a protein and why is it helpful?  Protein is a macronutrient made up of amino acids that builds and maintains body tissue.  Protein is the building blocks of the body and you must have it in your diet to survive.  There are tons of amino acids out there but our body can only break down and use 22 of them.  These are called essential amino acids; essential meaning our body doesn’t naturally make them and we must get them from food.

Protein is one of the most widely used supplements and there is good reason for that.  Below are some of the key benefits of protein.

Muscle growth and development- Protein helps build muscles following workouts.  When you workout your body is breaking down muscle tissue. Consuming protein after exercise builds those muscle tissues back up.  It is best to take within 30 minutes following work outs.  Several studies show strength also increases with protein. This is likely due to the growth and development of muscles.

Lose belly fat and burn more body fat- Protein fills you up and keeps you full longer.  When you consume protein, the amount of calories your body burns is increased, even when resting.  Plant protein especially speeds up your metabolism. Your body burns more calories after eating protein than it does after fat and carbs. It also helps you develop lean muscle and maintain muscle mass, both are components to fat loss

Better Brain function- Protein improves the function of the brain in several ways.  It helps make hormones, enzymes, and neurotransmitters. The hormones and enzymes that control all body processes are made up of protein.  Neurotransmitters are what brain cells use to communicate with each other.  Your brain needs amino acids to keep concentration and energy levels up and have better focus.  Your brain uses amino acids to improve motor skills and learning.  Protein can boost your mood by helping synthesize hormones, dopamine and serotonin.

Heart Health and Slow Down Aging-Protein helps synthesize glutathione, the major antioxidant that is stored in our cells to detox and reduce carcinogens responsible for aging.  Deficiency in glutathione can lead to oxidative stress, which plays a role in diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.  Several studies show a link between protein consumption and lower risk of hypertension and coronary heart disease.  Protein can help prevent diabetes because it plays a role in balancing blood sugar.

Most people are not getting the amount of protein that they should be from diet alone.  Protein supplementation should be included in any diet.  If you are trying to build lean muscle, get stronger, lose weight, or just maintain a healthy lifestyle, you should be supplementing protein.

Is all Protein Powder the same and How much do we need?

Protein is derived from the Greek word protos, meaning “first.” I believe protein supplements should be part of everyone’s diet.   According to Dietary Reference Intake, we should be consuming 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight or 0.36 grams per pound.  That is around 56 grams for the average man, and 46 grams for the average woman, per day.

All protein powders are not the same, in fact most have ingredients you don’t want to be eating or drinking everyday.  There are certain things you want to look for when choosing a protein powder.  First, decide if you want to use plant protein or protein from animal sources.  You are going to be drinking this everyday so you want to make sure you have good quality protein.  You must check the ingredients and nutritional facts.

  • How much sugar is in it, or does it use artificial sweeteners and what are they?

You don’t want a protein powder that is loaded with tons of sugar because that is going to offset the benefits.  Look for certain artificial sweeteners that are bad for you.  These include maltodextrin, aspartame, sucralose, sunett, splenda, acesulfame, acesulfame potassium.  Xylitol is another artificial sweetener that is cheap, processed, and bad for you.  There are many more so do your research on artificial sweeteners and make sure your powder isn’t loaded with these.

  • Does it have artificial colors?

Artificial colors are bad for you and have been shown to cause many health problems.  Some studies even said Red 40 has been shown to cause cancer, so it is really important to make sure these are not in your product.  Food coloring has been linked to hyperactivity, tumor growth, and allergic reactions.  Even though manufacturers know how bad these can be they still continue to poison us with them.

So How do I choose between Whey and Plant Protein?

Pros of Whey Protein

  • Lots of choices to choose from
  • Typically tastes better than plant
  • More Branch chained amino acids
  • Low lactose
  • Boosts immune system

Pros of Plant Protein

  • Made of rice, soy, hemp , or peas (I would recommend shying away from soy)
  • Easily digested especially hemp
  • Help your body detox
  • High in fiber
  • Alkaline forming
  • Avoid some of the problems that come with eating animal protein such as potential toxicity

I promise, when buying protein you want to make sure you have a high quality protein that isn’t loaded with sugars, artificial flavors, and food coloring.  This is going to make a world of difference and they don’t cost much more.  If you spend money on cheap low quality protein YOU ARE WASTING YOUR MONEY!

You have some great product reviews here, which one is your favorite? Im very picky on protein shake choices as not many are plant based and yet taste good. Which would you recommend that is most healthy ( no gluten, non-gmo, and taste great )?

Nice article. I agree with everything you state. My personal favorite is on your list – the bodylogix one but the decadent chocolate flavor. That one is awesome and I think is the best, or the best non-plant based one anyways. Thanks man.

    • Hey thank you and honestly the bodylogix plant protein is on my shelf the taste isn’t as good as the whey but I think plant protein has more benefits. Thanks for the read glad I interested you.
