What is stress and anxiety and why are they so bad?

  1. What is Stress and anxiety?  Stress is your brain and body’s response to an event or demand.  Jobs with a lot of pressure, sitting in traffic, having kids, getting ready for a big test, lack of sleep, and no physical activity can all bring your stress levels up.  Research even shows stress can build up from an event that happened when you were a child.  These are some of the main stressors but the list goes on and on.
  2. The Google dictionary says anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.

Everyone gets stressed out from time to time and there is no way to avoid it.  We are human beings, not robots so we have changes in feelings and emotions quite often.

You can develop anxiety as a result of stress which can also affect your health.   The effects of anxiety on the body are very similar to the ones of stress.

The build up of stress over time can cause drastic problems to your health both physical and mental.  There is no tool that measures stress like there is for blood pressure, statistics of stress cannot be tracked by your doctor.  However, it can literally kill you so it’s very important to have ways to manage stress.

What are the effects of stress and anxiety on the body?

Symptoms for stress

Statistics of stress

Stress can weaken the immune system and creates inflammation.
When things are going bad, it seems like a cold or some other form of infection is always right there to make things worse.  This is because the immune system is weakened and becomes more susceptible to colds and infections.

Chronic inflammatory is a side effect of stress which leads to a weaker immune system.  Our bodies are constantly getting attacked by antigens and the cells in our immune system are what fight them off.  When we get stressed, our ability to fight these antigens is reduced dramatically resulting in sickness.

White blood cells called lymphocytes fight off bad organisms that invade the immune system. The stress hormone corticosteroids suppresses lymphocytes causing the body to be at increased risk for disease and infection.

Chronic stress also decreases the number of proteins responsible for communicating with other immune cells.  This can lead to longer healing times of wounds or sicknesses.

Stress can cause your immune system to get weak other ways too…
with such a fast moving society we live in, people are constantly looking for quick fixes to their problems.   People often turn to smoking, alcohol,  or drugs to relieve their stress temporarily.  These can lead to a whole other slew of health problems and even increase chances of death.  They can also lead to sleep problems and lack of exercise which can make your stress even worse.

Symptoms for stress related to the heart and anxiety issues that arise from stress…
Symptoms for stress related to the heart are increased heart rate and cholesterol.  The increased heart rate causes build-up of cholesterol in your arteries.  Stress also causes your blood pressure to rise.  Over time high blood pressure can lead to coronary heart disease.

Anxiety and depression are both very common results of chronic stress.  Stress and anxiety are one big death circle because stress can lead to anxiety.  Worrying all the time can lead to even more lack of sleep, poor work performance and make the stress even worse.  So it might be confusing but stress leads to anxiety and anxiety leads to more stress.

Chronic worrying triggers the fight flight response causing the body to release stress hormones such as cortisol.  The release of this hormone can raise blood sugar and triglyceride levels.  If this happens time after time you are on the fast track to diabetes.

The effects of anxiety on the brain aren’t any better.  Anxiety causes the stress hormone adrenaline to rise.  This rise in adrenaline is toxic to the brain and the immune system.  Stress also effects the hippocampus, the part for memory, leading to an “adrenal burnout” causing brain damage.

Your sex drives suffers from stress as well…
I think its safe to say most people enjoy sex and it can be a great way to relieve stress.  However, stress can lower testosterone or estrogen and decrease sexual desire.  Stress can actually lead to a decreased production of sex hormones by increasing cortisol.

Symptoms of stress in women can be damaging.  Pregnant women who have a lot of stress can have children that have a higher chance of development and behavior issues.

Research shows that stress leads to overeating…..
A study done at University of Miami found people eat 40% more when they are stressed out.  This could be because the “feel good” feeling you get from eating that gives you a temporary quick fix.

So as you can see the symtpoms for stress are no joke and can do serious harm to your health.  The statistics of stress relsted deaths is very, higher than alot of people realize.  People who don’t take this health concern seriously and find ways to manage stress can become statistics of stress.

It is so easy to get stressed and several things can cause it, but what are some ways to deal with stress?

  • When you start developing symptoms of stress or getting stressed out act on it, don’t let it consumes you.

  • Relax a little bit!  Life is always on the go and moving, sometimes you just need to take a little time to relax.  You can go out in nature and walk, go fishing, see a movie, hang out with friends, or anything that takes you to you happy place.  Do some relaxation exercises such as yoga, meditation, or tai che.  Do some kind of breathing exercises.  This will relax your whole body and get your heart rate down.
  • Be Prepared and Organized.  When you are organized you can keep track of things better and won’t lose as much.  When you are not organized you are constantly looking for something, lose stuff, fall behind, or just forget about something important.  If your not prepared for something it can really stress you out.  For example, a test, if you study for a test and know the content you won’t stress as much because your more confident.
  • Set goals and Don’t overdo it.  If you have goals set you can achieve them in all aspects of life and decided what you have to get done.  Make sure you only take responsibility for things that are achievable.  If you start taking on nearly impossible tasks, you are going to be stressed when you cant’ achieve them.
  • Be around positive people.  Make sure the people you hang around are not stressing you out.  If you around someone negative all the time it can cause a lot of stress.  Be around people that make you happy and support you.

There are ways to deal with your stress and prevent stress without turning to unhealthy “quick fixes.”  I encourage you to leave your feedback below about some possible ways you deal with stress.  Comment and tell us some things that stress you out and how you deal with them.  Make this a place where people can come and help relieve stress.

Stress is an agent of all illnesses. When the immune system is broken down the body is left to contract whatever it comes in contact with. You have given valuable tips how one can make an effort to combat stress.
I agree that relaxation is vital to good health, we should always find time to relax and take care of ourselves. Sometimes we need to be reminded that the things that were not done today can be done another day.

    Thanks for this informative post.

    • Yes you are very right I don’t think a lot of people realize that stress could be the reason they get sick, especially the common cold. It completely breaks your immune system down to the point where is does not fight off bad organisms. I believe that finding time to relax is one of the most important things you can do to fight and relieve stress. If you are getting stressed everyday from work, kids, or whatever it is and never take a break that’s when the stress builds up. Built up stress over time is what really destroys your health and can cause disease. Yes that’s what I was aiming for in this article, to remind people that stress is a silent killer and there’s always tomorrow. You can’t overdo it all the time and stress yourself out over things that can be done another day you make a great point. I think sometimes people need to take a step back and ask themselves “is stressing over this specific thing worth killing yourself over.”

  3. Hello Joseph. This is a wonderful blog about stress. I had to deal with stress all of my life, and after reading this article, I have learned that I need to seriously keep my stress level down. I exercise everyday, I hang around positive people, I will work on keeping myself organized, relax more often, and try not to overthink so much(I do that a lot). Thanks for the vital information!!! It was very needed.

    • Hello Ahmad,
Thank you for taking the time to read my article I wrote this because I believe it is one of the most important things people need to deal with in their lives. Exercising and hanging around positive people is really key to keeping stress down and you must take time out to relax and do stuff you enjoy and let loose. I always tell people not to overthink and worry too much because worrying about something is pointless because whatever your worrying about is going to turn out the same way whether you worry or don’t worry. You can always try to makes something better that your worried about but you know sitting at home worrying and stressing out over it is not going to change the outcome. I’m very glad you got good information out of my article I get very excited to hear that I helped someone. If I can help someone or make a change in one persons life it was well worth my time. Good luck on keeping your stress down and thank you again. Have a great day 🙂

Wow. I knew stress was bad news, but after reading your post I now know that it’s really awful. No wonder the word disease is DIS – EASE. In other words, stress. When I’m stressed out I do notice that I get little sleep and my blood pressure goes up. The impact on the immune system is an eye opener for me. Because if your immune system is affected then you are at risk for just about any virus or infection. I’m starting vacation from tomorrow so I’m going to be focusing on de-stressing as much as possible

    Thanks for sharing this post

    • Yes I know most people don’t have a clue how bad stress is in fact its one of the top killers in America. Most people wonder why they can’t sleep and are sick all the time and most of it probably has to do with stress. That vacation will be good for you and why your on vacation don’t let any bad thoughts enter your mind this is time for you to relax and let loose and not worry about anything. Thank you for reading my post the goal was to open peoples eyes and really help them out and if I can help just one person it was totally worth it.

I must agree with how you detail stress and its negative effects. I have been having a stressful year and I did not know tat it correlates with your sex drive but looking back I did not pay any attention to my girl for almost two months and did not even want to be bothered. I definitely try to work out to combat stress and also by cutting certain people out of my life that causes me to be stressed.

    • Yeah alot of people when they get older they get erectile dysfunction that could be from built up stress. But I agree I have done the same you have when inwas really stressed all the time

You highlighted the effects of stress accurately and its something that affects all our lives I’m sure. I love the list of ideas you have to deal with it and particularly like the one about setting a goal and not overdoing it. Frankly was surprised you said not overdoing it rather than go big on it. It’s a refreshing idea to be realistic about one’s goals rather than to get stressed about something that is suppose to relief you from it. Thanks for a great post.

    • Thank you reading my article and actually diagnosing it. Yes the list of ways to deal with it is the most important because they can relieve and prevent stress. Yes, overdoing it is one of the biggest reasons for stress with all the high pressure jobs out there. I put a link on there for an acupuncture mat that does then best for relieving stress and pain and stiffness you should check it out. Thank you again for the input and I’m glad you got something out of it.
